Keep this list somewhere safe; then you will always know exactly what to do.

When the siren sounds:

  • Go inside
  • Close all windows and doors.
  • Tune in to the emergency TV or radio station:

In case of a large fire:

  • Leave the building; take children and the handicapped with you.
  • Close all doors and windows behind you.
  • If you can't see through the smoke any more stay close to the ground.
  • When you're unable to leave the building, move to the window closest to the street. This makes it easier for the fire brigade to see you.
  • Never go back inside a burning building.

In case of flooding:

  • Tune in to the emergency radio station on your portable radio.
  • Switch off gas and electricity.
  • Assemble an emergency package in case you have to be evacuated, containing a torch,  clothes, blankets, medications, important documents, batteries, food and drinks.
  • Check if the neighbours are aware of the situation and if they need help.

In case of a chemical emergency:

  • Tune in to the emergency radio station on your portable radio.
  • Stay inside and wait for further instructions

In case of a terrorist attack:

  • Always follow instructions from police, security personnel, and emergency relief workers.
  • Use your phone only briefly and not for unnecessary conversations.
  • If you are not injured seriously, help others as much as possible.
  • Give any information that can help in tracking down the offenders such as descriptions or the description of a car, to the police.
  • Don't go to look at the scene of the attack.

In case of protracted breakdown of electricity, gas or water supplies or telephone services:

  • Tune in to the emergency radio station on your portable radio.
(Regional emergency: Radio West: FM 91.1 or National emergenc: Radio 1: FM 98.9)
  • Keep warm. Put on warm clothes.
  • Keep a torch and batteries close to you.
